The UK tax system is evolving, and with it comes one of the most significant changes in how individuals and businesses report their tax: Making Tax Digital (MTD).
From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 will be required to maintain digital records and submit quarterly tax updates through HMRC-recognised software. This will then extend to those earning over £30,000 from April 2027, with further rollout expected for those earning over £20,000 from April 2028.
In her recent video, Hayward Wright Director, Chloe Blackwell, explains that MTD represents a major shift away from the traditional single annual tax return. Instead, taxpayers will provide quarterly online submissions supported by an annual declaration, offering far greater visibility of their tax position throughout the year.
This more regular reporting brings significant advantages. By maintaining digital records and submitting updates every quarter, you’ll have a clearer, real-time view of your finances, enabling better forecasting, cash-flow management, and tax planning. It’s also expected to reduce errors, improve compliance, and help taxpayers stay on top of deadlines with less last-minute stress.
While the move to digital tax reporting will simplify many aspects of record-keeping and accuracy, it also requires a period of adjustment. Choosing the right software, ensuring your data is correctly structured, and understanding the new reporting process will all be key to a smooth transition.
For many, the benefits will soon outweigh the challenges. The ability to see your tax liabilities evolve across the year gives business owners and landlords greater control over budgeting and decision-making, turning what was once an annual administrative burden into a valuable planning tool.
At Hayward Wright, our team is already helping clients prepare for these upcoming changes. Whether you’re a sole trader, landlord, or business owner, we can guide you through the transition to MTD, recommend suitable digital tools, and ensure your systems and processes are fully compliant.
