- Consume at least 25,000 kWh of energy per year (typically under £10k in annual spend)
What the funding can cover
One of the strengths of the scheme is its breadth. Eligible investments include:
- Solar panels
- Building insulation and improved heating systems
- Refrigeration upgrades
- Water management improvements
- Ventilation and air handling systems
- Recycling and waste technology (balers, compactors, crushers)
- LED and intelligent lighting solutions
These upgrades not only reduce consumption but often lead to immediate operational efficiencies. In fact, some solar installations have achieved payback periods of under three years at full cost, meaning grant-funded projects could deliver returns in as little as 18 months.
To access the funding, businesses must first undertake a free energy assessment, followed by gathering at least three quotes for each investment. The cheapest quote does not have to be selected, provided there is a justified business case. Additionally, businesses must fund the initial outlay themselves before being reimbursed through the grant.
For leasehold premises, landlords and tenants will need to agree on installation rights and benefit-sharing, for example, how feed-in tariffs or property value enhancements are allocated. These conversations can take time, so early action is essential.

With the deadline in sight and high demand expected as we move closer to 2026, the biggest risk for businesses is simply waiting too long. Grant programmes historically experience a surge in applications as deadlines loom, which can slow processing times and limit the remaining funding available.
Additionally, energy-efficiency technologies are evolving rapidly. The sooner businesses start the process, the sooner they benefit from cost savings, and the more competitive they become in a market that increasingly values sustainability performance.
